U.S. Treasuries extended earlier losses after the announcement, suggesting the scale was smaller than some investors had expected. It remains to be seen how successful the expanded purchase program will be. Following the initial announcement of the program last month, yields fell but subsequently rebounded. The benchmark 10-year yield reached its highest level since 2023 last week. Guha, an economist who previously worked at the New York Fed, stated: "The challenge is always whether the impact of these interventions can be sustained without more significant fundamental changes." Moreover, the maximum scale of the buyback operations does not necessarily mean the Treasury will purchase that amount of debt. However, in buybacks targeting long-dated nominal debt, the department tends to purchase the full scale, having failed to do so only twice in 52 such operations since the program was relaunched in 2024. The crude oil market has been repricing following the escalation of related events. In Myriad's market on whether crude first hits $120 or falls to $55, the probability for the $120 side is 56.5%, up 15.1 percentage points from early September; the market has seen $12.7 million in trading volume since March. Polymarket data shows the probability of WTI hitting $100 this month is 59%, up 9 percentage points, while the probability of hitting $105 is 30%, up 25 percentage points. On Polymarket, the probability of WTI falling to $85 this month has dropped to 39%, down 33 percentage points from the previous reading, with probabilities for all levels below $85 under 10%; the probability for $55 is 1%. DashTape reports Coinbase announced that it has partnered with Stanford University cryptography professor Dan Boneh and Localhost Research to host a closed-door "Post-Quantum Bitcoin Workshop" at Stanford University, bringing together Bitcoin developers, cryptography experts, researchers, institutional custodians, and hardware wallet specialists to discuss technical and migration solutions for Bitcoin to address future quantum computing threats. The workshop focused on assessing the progress of quantum computing development, post-quantum cryptography, and different post-quantum signature schemes applicable to Bitcoin, as well as discussing Ethereum's quantum resistance roadmap, practical requirements for institutional custody operations, and how to introduce post-quantum security mechanisms to Bitcoin through new output types and other means. Participants agreed that rather than predicting when quantum computing will pose an actual threat to existing cryptographic systems, it is more important to establish thoroughly tested contingency plans in advance. Quantum computing does not currently pose an imminent crisis, but the earlier research and coordination begins, the better equipped the ecosystem will be to avoid rushed network upgrades and asset migrations under pressure in the future. However, no single post-quantum solution has yet reached consensus. Different approaches involve trade-offs in security, transaction data size, hardware performance, key management, and the difficulty of user migration. Participants noted that Bitcoin's quantum resistance cannot rely solely on protocol-level upgrades—it also requires simultaneous consideration of how individual users, institutional custodians, wallets, and hardware devices generate, store, back up, and migrate keys and assets.
