DashTape reports Ethereum software company Consensys has announced the spin-off of its flagship wallet MetaMask into an independent entity, with founder Joe Lubin serving as CEO. The original Consensys has been renamed to a new entity focused on institutional protocols and Ethereum software, led by longtime executive Mike Kriak. Joe Lubin stated that the spin-off is due to MetaMask's consumer business value accumulating at a pace far exceeding other business divisions. MetaMask has evolved from an Ethereum wallet into a platform supporting multiple assets and Mastercard debit card payments, and has launched businesses such as perpetual contracts and prediction markets.

The workshop focused on assessing the progress of quantum computing development, post-quantum cryptography, and different post-quantum signature schemes applicable to Bitcoin, as well as discussing Ethereum's quantum resistance roadmap, practical requirements for institutional custody operations, and how to introduce post-quantum security mechanisms to Bitcoin through new output types and other means. Participants agreed that rather than predicting when quantum computing will pose an actual threat to existing cryptographic systems, it is more important to establish thoroughly tested contingency plans in advance. Quantum computing does not currently pose an imminent crisis, but the earlier research and coordination begins, the better equipped the ecosystem will be to avoid rushed network upgrades and asset migrations under pressure in the future. However, no single post-quantum solution has yet reached consensus. Different approaches involve trade-offs in security, transaction data size, hardware performance, key management, and the difficulty of user migration. Participants noted that Bitcoin's quantum resistance cannot rely solely on protocol-level upgrades—it also requires simultaneous consideration of how individual users, institutional custodians, wallets, and hardware devices generate, store, back up, and migrate keys and assets.
